Dear friend,
This is a special moment.
A new Year is a new beginning.
That’s why we celebrate it: It reminds us that the past is over.
We can always start anew.
We all have a second (third, fourth.... unlimited) chance in life.
It’s a moment of transcendence.
All it requires is a choice.
You are neither defined by your past,
nor bound to what you said, decided, failed at, or achieved yesterday.
You are free.
There are no obligations in life (other than what you chose to see as such).
That’s reality.
Now here is where many (I surely did) get hung up, especially around New Year.
You feel pushed and pressured into making commitments.
But commitment, in its literal sense, means obligating yourself to a goal and giving up your agency. There is no way this leads to intrinsic, long-term motivation. It’s often just a desperate attempt to cope with resistance and self-manipulate into change.
It’s a dead end and one of the main reasons that 92% of people's New Year resolutions fail, with only 1.2% of people actually achieving their goals. The other main reason is having wrong goals.
